Recovered Voices Symposium October 2016 Clive Greensmith

Clive Greensmith Lecture-Performance: "One Cellist to Another: Reflections on the Pál Hermann Cello Concerto" "In this session I will discuss my recent experience of performing—likely for the first time anywhere—the first and, we believe, only movement of the unfinished Cello Concerto by Hungarian-born cellist-composer Pál Hermann (1902–1944). The first performance of an unknown work by an unknown composer relies on no preconceived notions or practices and offers the performer exciting and liberating choices. I suggest that the composer’s early life and playing career, his contact with other young composers, his regular encounters with the latest works and techniques, and his deep understanding of his instrument combine in a most convincing manner in the 1925 Cello Concerto. Does my research into the composer and awareness of his fate affect my approach to the work? Does the fact that I encountered this work via the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices at the Colburn School influence my interpretation, and does the existence of this Initiative influence the approach of Colburn Conservatory of Music students to works by, for example, Erwin Schulhoff, Viktor Ullmann, or Gideon Klein? These are some of the questions I will examine, followed by a performance of the Cello Concerto movement." https://www.colburnschool.edu/page.cfm?p=3110 The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices at the Colburn School
